Three years ago, each Local 17 bargaining units voted on whether to use their sick leave cash-out at retirement as a tax-free benefit to be utilized toward healthcare costs.
Today, Local 17 members are voting to continue or discontinue this program in addition to perhaps adding to the options. Although each member has the opportunity to vote, it is important to remember that whatever the outcome, the vote is binding on all members. In other words, if a simple majority of the vote is to continue the VEBA benefit - ALL members of the bargaining unit are bound by this decision. The opposite is also true: if the outcome of the vote is none of the VEBA options, then the opportunity is not available for any member of the bargaining unit.

This vote covers a three year time period. It will expire at the end of 2012. At that time Local 17 will conduct another vote if VEBA options still exist and are offered to County employees.
