King County IT Bargaining Unit
Policy Committee Reformed
The collective bargaining agreement for the King County IT bargaining unit expires December 31, 2010 and negotiations for the next contract will begin later this year in the fall.
A bargaining unit-wide invitation was sent to members to attend a meeting to discuss reforming the Policy Committee (PC). The PC is the governing body of the unit and is integral in electing the members of the bargaining team and identifying the priorities for the next contract.
The meeting was well attended by 24 members with snacks generously provided by Peg Taglianetti and Charla Williams. Members were present from almost every one of the 7 departments represented in this contract.
Discussions centered around the logistics to approaching the upcoming negotiatons and we briefly touched upon a few substantive issues, as well. A communications subcommittee was formed which will include Sabra Schneider, Peg Taglianetti, Norene McPherson and Marlon Brown.
Further information on the goals and activities of the subcommittee will be shared once the group begins meeting. While there will be many challenges to negotiating a collective bargaining agreement during a budget deficit of $60 million, the Policy Committee is committed to ascertaining what the needs and interests are of the group and guiding the bargaining team effectively to achieve the most gains for our membership.

Stewards are the front line of the union. Stewards know the workplace as well as anyone and are the conduit through which membership, union staff, and management communicate.

POLICY COMMITTEE
The Policy Committee is a representative body that functions as an action-oriented executive of all members. The PC stands between the membership as a whole and the Bargaining Committee, serving to educate and communicate to the members and to provide direction, guidance and feedback to the Bargaining Committee.
We are in the process of forming a new PC from members who want to participate.
